| FROM CELIA: Prayers On My
Pillow was written for my older daughter, Julia, when she was twelve. She was
experiencing many of the physical and emotional changes of young adolescence. I wrote each
prayer in words that she might choose for herself to pray and put the prayer on her pillow
each night. Later we decided to share the prayers with other girls by publishing them in a
book. The prayers encourage girls to discover and tap their inner strengths to cope with
the problems and changes occurring in their lives.
FROM JULIA:
Ever since I was little, I've always felt I could come to my mom
with my problems. Then four years ago my mom and I seemed never to have time to talk.
That's when I asked her to write a prayer for me. Nothing fancy or long. Just a simple
form of communication. That night I found the first prayer on my pillow. The prayers gave
me something to look forward to. Not only did they address typical "teenage
problems" but they were also like a kiss goodnight. I would read some over and over
again to remember certain lines. But my favorite part was having a different prayer every
day!

When I was about nine years old I started worrying about things like
if I was having trouble with my friends or a teacher or I was scared about being left
alone in the house or especially about all the changes I felt growing up. I noticed that
Julia, my older sister, was reading little slips of paper with prayers on them. The moment
I read one, I wanted my mom to write them for me. So she did. It really helped me in
different ways. After I read the prayers or she read them to me, I felt better about my
self. I think these prayers will help the kids who read them because the prayers will make
their worries easier to handle.
